World Trade Organisation warns
against spoof website |
The World Trade Organisation is warning web users about a spoof version
of its website.
The parody resembles the WTO homepage but presents an alternative take
on globalisation.
WTO officials claim the phoney site could be gathering information
about web users.
In a warning published on its official homepage, the WTO says the site
is more than a nuisance to serious web users.
It alleges some pages could be used to gather personal information
about unsuspected visitors.
It is also annoyed by the unauthorised use of WTO logos, although says
it will not sue.
A spokesman for The Yes Men - the anti-globalisation group behind the
hoax site - told Computerworld.com the site is not harvesting information
about visitors and all incoming emails receive an automated reply.
The site's URL - Gatt.org - refers
to the WTO's previous incarnation, the General Agreement on Trade and
Tariffs.
