Meeting God turned out to be quite different from the way Rosie had imagined him. She had thought he would be bigger, more powerful, and definitely more muscular, but He turned out to be a little old man who kept walking back and forth by the gate. "That's God, introduce yourself," the angels told Rosie, but she kept failing to make identify Him. It was surely very impolite to overlook Him like this. One of the angels asked: "Do you speak English, Rosie?" but she kept looking for God and didn't answer, because she was confused by the multitudes of angels and the people promenading around as if they were waiting for something. "Do you speak English or Hebrew or possibly Chinese?" asked the angel again. "I took English in school. I speak a little bit. Why?" she whispered. "Good," the angel replied.
God was standing by the gate. He wasn't too tall and had black hair and slanted eyes. He leant on a walking cane.
"You speak Eng-lish, Lo-sie?" he asked in heavily accented English. He had a nice set of white teeth.
"Just a little," replied Rosie.
"Well, how a' you?," asked God and flashed a wide smile.
"I'm fine, thanks..."
"Wel-come to Hea-ven, de-ah Lo-sie. I hope you enjoy it here." He was Chinese, it was now clear as day. One angel leaned forward and whispered something into God's ear. God just nodded his head. "Excuse me now, I vel' busy tonigh..," He said and left, followed by the angel. In a moment the crowd had swallowed them.
Now Rosie can finally concentrate on the multitudes of dead people. They are walking back and forth and nobody pays her any attention. She looks for her guardian angel. There he is, standing and discussing something with someone. Vibrating in the air is an ever-present note not unpleasant to the ears. Rosie tunes her hearing to it but the ambient sound immediately fades. Still, she senses its continuing presence.
The air seems filled with joy and soft excitement, as if in anticipation of some long awaited event, as if a great party is about to start.
The tension has relaxed.
"It might not be a bad place after all," Rosie decided.
