I mean, really. We gave Sadaam a card of honor. Where is the reciprocity...

I think I want me one of these.

Do I even need to get offended about this?

There are so many WAYS I could be offended by this that I'm having trouble deciding which path to take.

Let's take the easy one:

The United States doesn't have regimes, and I resent the inferrence that we do.

Yes clearly. How dare we allow someone to participate in political satire! Why, thats almost like allowing freedom of speech! Clearly this harms our troops in Iraq.

Hey go listen to your Dixie Chick records, Pierre!

I couldn't decide, is Francois or Pierre a funnier French name? I almost went with Thierry, except I have never been sure how to pronounce it...

The radical Left / anti-globalization anarchists symbiosis makes me smile. Why get offended? Each little nugget like this only marginalizes their perspective further.

And I really enjoy the Left whining about how their free-speech is being repressed. Nevermind the irony that someone hacking their website as an individual is in now way a restriction of free speech, though it is a crime.

It's my bizarre theory that, given a choice between destroying the world and having the things they really, deeply want, they'll chose the latter. Perhaps the fact that they also link to a set of cards for the French government?

This should make the "Freedom" crowd happy

Why are American allies listed on the cards?
Bulgaria, Israel, Italy and Spain's prime ministers?

They could at least get real Americans on the cards. [Wink]

I'd be happy to volunteer.

I figure great with the ladies works good because they took all that time to compile a big list that it must piss them off to know someone is great with the ladies.

Suggesting that crimes should be committed against an individual or group, crimes that make that person's voice unable to be heard, is implying that their views should NOT be heard, and thus repressed. Arguing that the site should be hacked (and thus disabled) is arguing that they should not be allowed to have their views heard. This is suggesting a restriction of free speech.

Let's play Go Liberal!

Here are the rules:

1. Player One draws his hand and plays an anti-US card.

2. Other players tell Player One if he doesn't like the hand he is dealt, then he can kindly leave the game. After all, if he hates the game so much, why does he continue to play and be miserable?

3. Player One then has a choice. He can play the Race Card, the Poor Card, or the very powerful Freedom of Speech Card. If playing the Freedom of Speech card, Player One is allowed to play as many anti-US cards as he/she chooses without penalty.

4. Play continues until the other players throw their hands up in disgust.

YK - you forgot the most important rule to Go Liberal!

When you first play a card you must immediately check with each player around the table to make sure they are in no way offended by the card you have played. Pay special attention to the opinions of non-Caucasian players. If any player expresses discomfort or is beset with repressed memories by the card you played, you must play another card, which must again be fully checked to make sure it is wholly inoffensive.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

I think I'll stick with the original, for if we go with your definition, turning off the television is restricting free speech.

Is it ironic to invoke free speech to defend speakers who think that the execs of networks giving coverage the speakers don't like are war criminals?

I suppose. But then, free speech has been used to protect Nazis, Klansmen, and others who would vigorously and gleefully restrict the speech of others, so I suppose it is a tired irony by now.

Maybe we should also invoke freedom of the judiciary to defend the labeling as war criminals of any judges who make decisions one doesn't like. Of course, THAT's a hallmark of freedom-lovers everywhere. [Roll Eyes]

Very well said. Or the analogy I was going to use was if you don't like the books a library is lending out, just blow up the library. Hacking a site to prevent anyone from viewing it is no different. If someone hacked GG as a statement against “violence” in video games, I am sure many of us would be feeling a bit miffed about it. Also, unless you are a Nielson Family (lol, when I lived in PDX my wife and I were one long ago), turning the station does not do economic harm to the TV station. Hacking this site would clearly do economic harm to involved parties (they are selling these cards right?). Just out of curiosity Mike, would you condone and/or advocate the hacking of said website? And if yes, are you claiming such actions would not restrict the speech of the owners of said web site? Did you also think free speech was unharmed when Al Jazeer was hacked and no English speakers could access the site for days? Thanks for clarifying.

Back on topic, I found the cards pretty damn funny and wasn’t surprised a site like that would release such a thing (they obviously have their opinion on the war). I just saw it as a form of political speech done as satire. Nothing wrong with that.
