Here's to free speech and anti-globalization! Ah, those wily yes-men. IP: Logged |

Is "free speech" stealing images and even copyrights? Isn't that page breaking some law? IP: Logged |

What part was copyrighted? Where were the stolen images? Okay, other than the logo, I don't see anything truly illegal going on. And even with the logo, the Yes Men don't purport that it's their logo; they freely admit that it's of the WTO. Anyway, my statement wasn't so much one of complete agreement, just delight at seeing freespeech in action and the anti-globalization movement pulling such a stunt. The fact that they admit it's not their logo doesn't matter... if I steal your car, and then shout out "I FREELY ADMIT THIS IS DAREN'S CAR", I'm still doing something illegal. IP: Logged |

Nay, don't even think about trying to compare a physical object that is subject to direct and exclusive ownership to an intangible trademark. They admit it's the WTO's trademark, so they're not claiming it's their own. Thus, they're not stealing it. The image is not subject to direct ownership. I can say WTO, World Trade Organization, etc, as much as I want, without fear of repurcussions. I can also use their logo provided I don't claim it's my own, but the WTO may or may not reserve the right to ask me not to do so. Whether they are within their rights to do so is still a little blurred in the legal world. IP: Logged |

If the logo is owned by the WTO, then it's owned by the WTO --- there's no debate. If I start putting the Gap logo on my own brand of clothing, I'd be breaking the law, wouldn't I? And as for the authorization thing, I seriously doubt that the WTO is giving GATT permission to use their logo. Hence, the law breaks. IP: Logged |
