WTO Critics
Infiltrate Trade Lecture (english) by
The Yes Men 9:11pm Wed Jan 3 '01 |
|
Taking the parody of the WTO's web site to the
next level, activists manage to plant their own lecturer
at a trade conference in Austria. Attendees couldn't tell
the difference.
In October 2000, the Yes Men were offered an opportunity
they couldn't pass up: to lecture an international group of
distinguished lawyers on the ideology of the World Trade
Organization... as representatives of that agency.
"In
March 2000, the Yes Men are put in charge of answering
mail at Gatt.org, a website designed by RTMark to look
like the WTO's official website but convey the WTO's
message more clearly."
They field a request for the
WTO's Michael Moore to address a "Free Trade Uber Alles"
group.
Mr. Moore was not available, so they sent their
own man: "Andreas Bichlbauer, J.D." an imposter
masquerading as an official representative of the WTO
complete with his own PowerPoint presentation.
Apparently few in the audience could tell the
difference between Bichlbauer's staged ravings and the
WTO's typical "Free Trade Uber Alles" pitch!
