There was a time not long ago when things weren't like this. There was a time when American art and artists were adequately supported by the state, public libraries were built at a fast pace, public universities were affordable, there was ample money for students to study whatever they wanted-not just business and engineering-public hospitals were not crumbling to the ground and stuggling to continue providing basic services, and public transportation existed even in rambling cities like Los Angeles-and was safe and reliable.
[What happened to all these basic comforts, of the type that are taken for granted in places like Berlin, so much so that their complete eradication is unthinkable? Perhaps one example of what happened in the USA to destroy these comforts will suffice to explain this process, and will show just how it could apply to the present...]
