in the eyes of others

"I WAS the librarian. A librarian must have eyes. Besides, I was told that the board has found a new chief."

Jake coughed. "You don't get out nearly enough to catch up on all the gossip. She drove into town, had her interview with the board and left without looking back. When Dr. Taylor asked her about her religious affiliation and she told them she followed Islam, it was pretty much over."

"I'd have paid to hear the whispers around the board table. What's sad is that they seem to have learned nothing from the fire. They're blind to anything other than what they've been fed all their lives."

"That's why you need to apply for the job."

"Jake? I can't see. If I can't see I can't order books. I can't check out books. I can't even shelf them in the right stacks."

"You see better than over half the town, Tori. We can work out the details."

"Oh, I love the idea. I'll help. I'll volunteer to help," Mary said. "I'll be your eyes."

"And what makes you two think that they'll have me? What makes you think they want a blind librarian?"
