Abstract: The laser inertial confinement fusion programme developed at the
Centre d'etudes de Limeil-Valenton relies on the indirect drive scheme, in
which the laser radiation is converted into a soft X radiation that drives
the implosion of a D-T filled capsule. Experiments are performed with the
Nd glass laser facility Phebus, which delivers 5 kJ in 1.3 ns at lambda
=0.35 mu m. The objectives are to investigate the critical elements in
target physics that determine ignition and gain. The experiments address
primary topics such as irradiation symmetry and hydrodynamic instabilities
as well as other subjects relevant to hohlraum physics: X-ray conversion,
radiative transfer and atomic physics in X-ray driven plasmas. Theoretical
work and numerical simulations have shown that fuel ignition conditions and
approach with about 1-2 MJ of laser energy.

ANGARA-5 high intensity soft X-ray source with imploding liner cascade for
   inertial confinement fusion.
IN: Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1992. Proceedings
of the Fourteenth International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled
Nuclear Fusion Research. (Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion
Research 1992. Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Conference on
Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Wuerzburg, Germany, 30
   Sept.-7 Oct. 1992). Vienna, Austria: IAEA, 1993. p. 481-4 vol.3.
     Pub type: Practical; Experimental.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of theoretical calculations and
experimental investigations of the dynamics of a plasma and its parameters
in a collision of the accelerated gaseous liner with the inside shell in
the ANGARA-5 generator (a pulsed power facility consisting of eight modules
with a maximum power of 9 TW, a pulse duration of 90 ns at half-height and
a load current reaching 4 MA, depending on its impedance). Since 1988, the
main purposes of the investigations in ANGARA-5 have been (i) the
development of approaches to power sharpening of soft X-ray radiation
through conversion of the kinetic energy of the cylindrical shell liner
accelerated in the generator diode to radiation, and (ii) the application
of intense soft X-ray pulses to inertial confinement fusion research. The
ANGARA-5 concept is a cascade system of two liners. The external linear
accelerated by magnetic field pressure collides with the internal liner.
Thermal X-ray radiation brought about by a high velocity shock
(V=(4-5)*10/sup 7/ cm/s) penetrates into the internal linear cavity. The
external liner then screens the radiation, preventing it from escaping
outside and thereby achieving radiation power sharpening. The main results
obtained are: a radiation pulse intensity inside the liner cavity of about
15 TW/cm/sup 2/ with a front time duration of up to 3 ns (in theory and in
     simulations of up to 30 TW/cm/sup 2/ with a half-height time of 1.7 ns).

Abstract: The US Office of Fusion Energy is relying on the Department of
Energy's Defense Programs (DP) ICF Program to provide the target physics
data base for an Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) program. In the
indirect-drive approach, the primacy approach for heavy-ion beam driven
fusion (HI) and for the glass-laser-based National Ignition Facility (NIF),
the capsule is radiation driven, so that the implosion and burn physics
requirements apply to both types of drivers. If the ion-driven hohlraums
are heated to the same radiation temperature (T/sub r/), then the
requirements for hydrodynamic instability, implosion uniformity, and pulse
shaping can be directly applied. In addition, at the same radiation
temperature, X-ray hohlraum wall losses, radiation-driven hohlraum wall
motion, and radiation transport are also directly applicable. These are the
primary issues which affect coupling efficiency and hohlraum symmetry, so
that the DP hohlraum physics program provides a solid base for calculating
HI hohlraums. Progress on these issues on the Nova laser is described.

Numerical method for finding uniform irradiation conditions of a fusion

    Laser and Particle Beams, 1992, vol.10, (no.3):421-33.
      Pub type: Theoretical or Mathematical.

Abstract: A three-dimensional model to calculate X-ray intensity distribution on
an indirectly driven fusion target is presented. The model includes
conversion of laser light into X-rays, radiation reemission from
X-ray-heated wall of a cavity, and influence of an inner pellet (i.e. a
fuel capsule) on radiation redistribution. Intensity distribution of an
X-ray inside a cylindrical cavity heated by intense blue laser light
(wavelength 351 nm, energy 5.2 kJ, duration 0.7 ns) was determined by
measuring a burn-through signal from a diagnostic foil integrated onto the
cavity. The experimental result is well replicated by the model
calculation. By using this model, optimum conditions for uniform
irradiation of a fusion capsule by X-ray radiation are evaluated for use
in Gekko XII laser fusion experiments.

      Overview of inertial fusion program.

Conference IECEC-89 (Cat. No.89CH2781-3). (Proceedings of the 24th

    IEEE, 1989. p. 2827-31 vol.6.
      Pub type: General or Review.

Abstract: The inertial fusion program conducted by the US Department of Energy
is discussed. The program contributes to the US nuclear weapons program by
providing increased understanding of phenomena that occur during a nuclear
explosion and has potential benefits for electric power generation.
Progress on the part of the national laboratories and support contractors,
particularly in target physics and driver development, is reviewed. Early
stages of planning for a new, large facility, the laboratory Microfusion
Facility, which could have significant military and civilian energy
application benefits, are described. It is noted that facility cost,
benefits, and technological risk will have to be clearly understood before
a decision to proceed can be made.

All in all a pretty nice little physics review book from the perspective
of an inertial confinement fusion expert. However, his background seems
to preclude adequate consideration (1) of what happens to his designs in
the overall time frame of device disassembly & (2) how knowledge of what
happens during later device disassembly can be used to simplify ignition
problem. His designs also do not meet the physical constraint of fitting
within the geometry of current and historical thermonuclear weapons.

I would recommend this book as an introductory primer which should not be
taken as gospel when it comes to actual weapons design. However, FW has
a number of very interesting physics points to make. Well worth reading.
