Parsunas
Fom the Latin, a “persona” the
parsunas is a
type of portrait painting that developed in Russia
in the late sixteenth century in a transition
between traditional icon painting and Westernized,
"realistic" portraiture. Retaining the
one-dimensional style of icons, parsunas were made
into memorials of contemporary secular figures.
The emergence of parsunas
coincided with the decline of traditional icon
painting and the acceptance of Western European
style during the eighteenth century.
