The design for the letter ‘U’ uses comparable elements as those used for the letter “A” page. The view point of Michelangelo’s prototypic human is reversed, in Van Haarlems’s drawing, with the subject viewed from the back in the indeterminacy of undress. The figure is superimposed over Linglebach’s painting of nomadic gypsies resting on the shore, where they bathe. The subjects in the paintings look toward different perspectives, contrary to the direction of the spectator. A white hole in the image discloses the blank page, the surface of viewing and the two dimensional plane of rendition. |
